Natalizumab is a monoclonal antibody that selectively blocks immune cell receptors (alpha-4 integrins), preventing their migration across the blood-brain barrier into the central nervous system and preventing the inflammatory process underlying damage and destruction of the myelin sheath of nerves in multiple sclerosis.

Efiсtel® (INN: natalizumab) is used as a drug that modifies the course of multiple sclerosis (MS) for monotherapy of highly active forms of remitting MS in the following groups of adult patients (18 years and older):

  • with a highly active course of the disease, despite a complete and adequate course of treatment with at least one drug that alters the course of MS;
  • with rapidly progressing severe remitting MS, who suffered two or more disabling exacerbations during the year and have one or more foci according to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, accumulating gadolinium-containing contrast media for MRI, or a significant increase in the number of foci in T2 mode compared to the results of previous recent MRI.
